The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Hulayat Omidiran, has reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to promoting equity, justice, fairness and national unity as Nigerians mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
In her Democracy Day message, Omidiran described June 12 as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s democratic history, noting that it symbolizes the sacrifices made by patriots in the struggle for democratic governance, justice and national development.
She said the annual celebration offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey and recommit themselves to the ideals of unity, fairness, equity and inclusive governance, which she described as essential for building a stable and prosperous country.
According to the FCC chairman, democracy can only thrive when citizens from all parts of the country are given equal opportunities to participate in governance and contribute to national development, irrespective of their ethnic, religious, gender or social backgrounds.
She stated “Every Nigerian must have a sense of belonging and confidence that the nation’s institutions work for all,”.
Omidiran emphasized that the Federal Character Principle remains a critical constitutional mechanism for fostering national integration, social cohesion and inclusiveness, while ensuring that no section of the country is marginalized in the allocation of opportunities and representation in public institutions.
She assured Nigerians that the Commission would continue to strengthen transparency, accountability and fairness in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities, stressing that inclusive governance is key to sustaining public trust in democratic institutions.
The FCC boss also commended the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its Renewed Hope Agenda, saying its focus on economic reforms, institutional strengthening, social inclusion and national development aligns with the Commission’s vision of creating a more equitable society.
According to her, the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda depends largely on collective commitment to fairness, justice and shared prosperity among Nigerians.
She called on public institutions, private organisations and citizens to support policies and programmes that promote national unity, equal opportunity and sustainable development.
She said “As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our faith in democracy and work together to build a nation where merit, Tequity and inclusiveness remain the foundation of governance. By embracing unity in diversity and supporting initiatives that promote national cohesion, we can achieve the aspirations of a stronger, more prosperous and globally competitive Nigeria under the Renewed Hope Agenda,” .
