The Royal Organising Committee of the Gombe Emir’s Cup 2026 wishes to inform the public, participating Emirates, teams and stakeholders that the competition was placed on a temporary break following the controversy surrounding the semi-final match between Funakaye Emirate and the Late Shehu Abubakar Team.
An Independent Investigation Panel, comprising experienced football veterans from within and outside Gombe State,was constituted to establish the facts and ensure a fair and impartial review of the matter.
The Panel found that the controversy was largely centred on the availability, custody and verification of the Late Shehu Abubakar Team’s licences,as well as the handling and documentation of the alleged protest.
A statement from the Chairman of the Royal Organising Committee, Ahmed Shuaib Gara-Gombe highlighted the reason for the temporary pause on the competition. It also identified inconsistencies in some accounts and shortcomings in the documentation of key events.
The Panel therefore identified the matter primarily as an administrative and procedural lapses, particularly in the handling of the player licences and the proper procedure of recording of a protests.
The available evidence was not considered sufficient to attribute individual blame beyond what could reasonably be established.
The Royal Organising Committee appreciates the patience and understanding of all stakeholders and remains committed to fairness, sportsmanship and the successful completion of the competition.
As soon as the investigation and necessary administrative processes are concluded,the decisions will be communicated to the appropriate authorities and made known to the general public.
