Olopade Charges Gaborone Bound Team Nigeria To Target Podium Finish

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has charged Nigerian athletes to deliver strong performances at the 2026 World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, urging them to uphold the country’s reputation on the global stage.

Speaking ahead of the team’s departure, NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade stressed the importance of discipline, unity, and determination, describing the competition as a key opportunity for Nigeria to reaffirm its status in international athletics.

According to him “The entire nation stands firmly behind you,” adding “We have absolute faith in your ability to deliver and make Nigeria proud.”

Olopade, who urged the athletes to target podium finish, while also securing qualification spots for future global championships, promised to be physically present in Botswana to cheer them, and also underscore the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the athletes.

The 24-member Nigerian contingent departed on Monday aboard Ethiopian Airlines, although some athletes are expected to join the squad in Botswana from their respective international training bases.

The NSC has assured the team of full institutional support, alongside encouragement from Nigerians at home and abroad.

Nigeria will compete in all six relay events at the championship, scheduled to take place from May 2 to May 3, 2026, which will also serves as a qualifying pathway for the World Athletics Championships Beijing 2027, adding further significance to the event.
