Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has commended the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for voluntarily relinquishing their positions, describing the decision as a sacrifice made in the interest of the country..
Olopade praised the NFF President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, members of the Executive Committee and the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, for what he described as an act of patriotism that helped Nigeria avoid potential sanctions from world football governing body FIFA.
Speaking during an interview at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Olopade urged Nigerians to appreciate the decision of the NFF leadership.
Olopade said “Nigerians should applaud the decision of the NFF leadership to resign,” adding “They sacrificed themselves for the love of the country, which is why Nigeria did not attract a FIFA ban.
“They deserve national awards because not everyone loves the country to the extent of sacrificing their personal interests for the interests of Nigeria.”
The NSC DG said the decision demonstrated an uncommon level of commitment to the nation, stressing that placing the country’s interest above personal positions was worthy of recognition.
The NFF leadership resigned on Thursday, August 26, 2026, following mounting concerns over the performances of the country’s national teams.
The development triggered a leadership transition within the football federation as stakeholders began discussions on the next steps for the administration of Nigerian football.
