
The President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Tonobok Okowa, has congratulated sprint sensation, Kanyinsola Ajayi and quarter miler Samuel Ogazi, for their outstanding performances in the ongoing NCAA East Regionals in the US.
Ajayi of Auburn University, ran a blistering 2026 world lead in 100m men with a time of 9.84 sec, surpassing the long standing 20-year old record of 9.85 seconds set by Olusoji Fasuba in 2006.
Ogazi, a student of the University of Alabama, also ran a world lead in the 400m in a sensational time of 43.82s, his new personal best.
The AFN President, Okowa, while acknowledging the remarkable progress in their athletics career, said they have proven again that Nigeria remains a force to reckon with in the global athletics arena.
Okowa said “We are very proud of the success of our athletes doing great things in the ongoing NCAA East and West Regionals in the US and other meets. Kanyinsola Ajayi, Samuel Ogazi, Israel Okon, Nicholas Fakorede, Alaba Akintola, Edidiong Udo, Joshua Caleb, Charles Godfred, Favour Onyah, Chioma Nwachukwu,Tima Godbless, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Prestina Ochonogor, John Caleb and David Akhalu among others have done very well. I am equally happy that many of them punched their tickets to the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene next month. I say congratulations!”
He said the prayers of the country and the federation remain with them ahead of their respective finals and the Eugene championships.
