Before many Nigerian stars became household names in Europe, one man was already flying the nation’s flag across the world. His name was Richard “Ricky” Owubokiri.

Born on July 16, 1961, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Richard “Ricky” Daddy Owubokiri rose from the Nigerian league to become one of Africa’s most respected strikers of the 1980s and 1990s.
He began his football journey with Sharks FC and ACB Lagos, where his goalscoring ability quickly made him one of Nigeria’s most exciting talents. His performances opened doors to opportunities that very few African players enjoyed at the time.
One of the most remarkable chapters of his career came when he moved to Brazil in 1983. During that era, it was extremely rare for an African footballer to play in South America, yet Ricky not only played there but also excelled.
Representing clubs such as América FC and Vitória, he became a fan favorite and earned respect for his professionalism, determination, and ability to score goals. His success helped showcase Nigerian talent to an entirely new audience.
Ricky later took his talents to Europe, where he played in France for Stade Lavallois and FC Metz. His time at Metz brought silverware and further strengthened his reputation as one of Nigeria’s finest football exports.
However, it was in Portugal where he reached the peak of his career.
Playing for clubs including Benfica, Boavista, Belenenses, and Estrela da Amadora, Ricky became one of the most feared strikers in the league.
His greatest individual achievement came during the 1991/92 season when he scored an incredible 30 league goals for Boavista, finishing as the Portuguese League’s top scorer. That remarkable feat remains one of the greatest goalscoring seasons ever achieved by a Nigerian footballer in Europe.
For the Super Eagles, Ricky represented Nigeria between 1982 and 1992, earning 23 international caps and playing during a crucial period in the country’s football development. He featured at the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations and helped lay foundations for future generations of Nigerian football stars.
