NDC Zones Presidential Ticket To South For 2027, North 2031

In keeping with the principle of rotational presidency between the North and the South, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has zoned its 2027 Presidential Ticket to the Southern part of Nigeria, but for a single four-year term.

The zoning arrangement is a confirmation of the behind the scenes discussions and agreements that must have compelled His Excellencies Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to dump the African Democratic Congress for the NDC.

This announcement also puts paid to speculation to where the party will zone its Presidential ticket to and allay fears of the people from the North about power returning to the North in 2031

The latest pronuncement obviously gives Peter Obi the edge above any other candidate who may wish to contest from the Southern part of Nigeria on the platform of the NDC.

The Party’s decision followed a motion to that effect moved by a member of the House of Representatives, Hon Afam Victor Ogene at its national convention which held on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Interestingly, the delegates adopted the motion without a dissenting voice.

Under the arrangement, the South gets the ticket for 2027 only and once the four-year term ends, the ticket is expected to automatically move to the North.

The convention resolution has effectively positioned Obi to pick the 2027 presidential ticket of the NDC .

Inside sources said the NDC leaders deliberately framed the arrangement as a balance between regional equity and political strategy ahead of 2027.
