The question most Nigerians both at home and in diaspora will always ask is-why do Nigerians excel outside the shores of the country? In all spheres of life across the world, when it comes to excellence, you will always find the name of a Nigerian on the list. While Nigerians, whether at home or abroad as nationals of other countries, hug headlines and rule their world, back home, the country continues to crawl on all fours when it comes to development indices.
Meet Obinna Ogbonnia Otuu , who hails from Afikpo North in Ebonyi State and has just reached a monumental peak in the global computing world. Interestingly, there are many more of Otuus hidden all over the world from Canaad to America, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Obinna was just awarded the ACM CHI Gold Medal (First Position) in the PhD Graduate Research Competition at CHI 2026 in Barcelona, Spain.
This victory is particularly significant as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) stands as the world’s largest and most prestigious professional body in the field of computing.
Out of an initial pool of 62 international contestants, Obinna was shortlisted to the final 12, eventually becoming one of only three finalists to advance to the final round. Despite the intensity of the competition and the fact that this is remarkably his second PhD, his work stood out as the best in its class.
This latest achievement adds to an intimidating roll call of honours where he has consistently maintained the top position:
2020 — He won the NITDA Scholarship Award, emerging from 1,570 lecturers and IT practitioners to represent Southeastern Nigeria as one of six selected for global sponsorship.
2023 — He was awarded Toastmasters Award of the Year in the United Kingdom.
2024– He received the Research Honorary Mention Award in Melbourne, Australia, representing UK SIGCHI researchers.
2024 —He was named Best Mobile Technology Designer in Hawaii, USA, representing ACM Region 8 (UK and Europe).
2025 — He received the Gary Marson Surveillance System Award in Manitoba, Canada.
2025 — He was awarded the ACM SIGCHI Best Paper Award in Yokohama, Japan, prevailing over 5,100 global competitors.
2025 —- He was Conferred with Life Membership by the Nigerian Computer Society for his expertise and contributions to the IT body of knowledge.
As a globally recognized researcher, Obinna now holds the rare privilege of international travel without visa restrictions.
Congratulations Nwa Ehugbo! (AFIKPO)
