In a swift humanitarian response, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has approved the release of N143 million as relief package to 76 traders affected by fire outbreaks at the Old Market and Sokoto Central Motor Park.
The Chairman of the Fire Outbreaks Assessment Committee, Ghandi Umar, disclosed this in Sokoto during the flag-off of the disbursement exercise.
Umar, who is the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Administration and Legal Matters, said the governor’s approval came immediately after the committee submitted its report last Friday.
He described Governor Aliyu’s prompt action as a demonstration of compassionate leadership and genuine concern for the plight of disaster victims.
According to him, the committee carried out a thorough assessment of losses suffered by each victim, and the disbursement was done based on the extent of damage incurred.
He lauded the beneficiaries for their patience and maturity throughout the process, stressing that while no amount of money could fully compensate for their losses, the intervention was meant to help them bounce back and revive their businesses.
He advised them to invest the funds wisely to rebuild their livelihoods, adding that only Almighty Allah can fully recompense their losses.
At the ceremony, some of the worst-hit traders received substantial support.
Muktar Mamman of Old Market got over N9.8 million, Aminu Tsoho Helele received over N3.9 million, while Alhaji Ya’u Tayi Balance received over N3.4 million. Others received varying amounts in line with assessed losses. The beneficiaries, who could not hide their joy, thanked Governor Aliyu for coming to their aid at a critical time, describing the gesture as timely and life-restoring. They prayed for the success of his administration and pledged to make judicious use of the support.
