The national Under-17 women’s team,the Flamingos, will return home on the back of another successful FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualification campaign.
The Nigerian girls defeated their counterparts from Benin Republic 5-3 in Lome, Togo on Saturday to qualify for the tenth edition of the tournament on 8-3 aggregate.
The team is scheduled to depart Lomé, Togo, at 3:15 p.m. and arrive in Lagos at 5:15 p.m. Nigerian time following the conclusion of the qualifying series.
The qualification marks another significant milestone for the Flamingos, who have consistently established themselves among the leading teams in youth women’s football.
The Flamingos will now face two time defending champions, Korea DPR in Group B alongside Poland, and Puerto Rico for this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup holding in Morocco later in the year.
Nigeria has qualified for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup a total of 9 times.
Their qualification history includes: 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2022, 2024, and 2026.
Flamingos best outing remains the 2022 edition in India where the team secured a bronze medal after defeating Germany 3-2 on penalties after the match had ended 3-3 at full time.
The team in 2022 lost to Colombia in the semi final 5-6on penalties after both teams had ended the encounter goalless.
