
National number one tennis player, Canice Abua has emerged the winner of the 47th CBN Open Tennis Championship after dethroning the defending champion, Emmanuel Michael 6-1, 6-2.
In the Ladies Singles, The GEUF Tennis Academy player Etoro Bassey came from a set down to defeat Success Ogunjobi 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to win her maiden CBN title.
Speaking at the end of the Championship, the CBN Governor, Oluyemi Cardoso said the CBN remains passionate about the holistic development of Nigerian youth, stressing that they see sports not just as entertainment but as a powerful tool for empowerment, engagement, and national integration.
The governor who was represented by the Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali noted that by supporting initiatives such as this championship, they reaffirm their dedication to building a stronger, healthier, and more united Nigeria.

The CBN Governor explained that their commitment stems from a deep belief in the transformative power of sports, particularly tennis, as a platform for discovering talent, shaping character, and fostering national unity.
He stressed that “Over the years, this tournament has produced champions who have risen from humble beginnings to achieve national and international acclaim. This legacy of excellence is one we cherish and continue to nurture.”
According to the governor “In furtherance of this vision, the CBN launched the Junior Tennis Tournament in 2006 to serve as a nursery for grooming young talents, adding “Today, we are delighted to see some of our senior finalists who once graced that junior stage. Their journey is a testament to the value of continuity, mentorship, and investment in youth development.”
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the Director, Federation of Elite Athletes Development, Nkana Mbora thanked the apex bank for sustaining the sponsorship in the last 47 years and implored them not to relent.
The new champion, Canice Abua said he worked very hard to overcome the defending champion and commended the CBN for continuously sponsoring the biggest tennis competition in the country.
