Nigeria has stepped up its ambition to host the 2030 World Athletics U20 Championships following a high-level engagement between the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, and officials of World Athletics in Budapest, Hungary.
The meeting, held on the sidelines of the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships, focused on Nigeria’s interest in hosting the global junior athletics championship in 2030.
Olopade reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to welcome the world’s leading young athletics talents, assuring World Athletics of the country’s commitment to providing the facilities, organisational standards and hospitality required to stage a successful international championship.
The NSC Director General highlighted Nigeria’s growing investment in sports infrastructure, athlete development and event management, noting that the country is increasingly positioned to assume greater responsibilities on the international sporting stage.
Nigeria’s case for hosting the 2030 championship is further strengthened by its recent success in staging major athletics competitions.
In July 2025, Nigeria stepped in at short notice to host the CAA Africa U20/U18 Athletics Championships in Abeokuta, Ogun State, bringing together delegations from more than 40 African countries and nearly 1,000 athletes, officials and other participants.
The successful delivery of the continental championship demonstrated Nigeria’s capacity to organise major athletics events while showcasing the country’s hospitality and passion for the sport.
Olopade pointed to the Abeokuta championships as an important reference point in Nigeria’s quest to secure the 2030 World Athletics U20 Championships, stressing that the experience provided a strong foundation for the country’s global hosting ambition.
The Budapest engagement is also part of the NSC’s broader strategy to deepen Nigeria’s relationship with international sports federations and position the country as a preferred destination for major global sporting events.
A successful bid would give Nigeria an opportunity not only to host one of the world’s leading youth athletics championships but also to further promote the development of athletics and expose a new generation of Nigerian athletes to world-class competition on home soil.
