The Federal Government has finally presented the rewards promised to members of the Super Falcons after the team won the the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The presentation ceremony took place on Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco, just hours before Super Falcons opening Group C match against Malawi but shockingly the team failed to fly against the debutants Malawian ladies,losing 2-3.
The NFF confirmed the news through its official X account that NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi led the presentation on behalf of the Federal Government.
VDCInsights reports the rewards to the players include a cash gift of $100,000 for each player, already paid into the players individual bank accounts, and the allocation of a three-bedroom apartment to every player under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Estate initiative.
The technical crew were also beneficiaries of the Federal Government largesse .
President Bola Tinubu announced the incentives when he hosted the team on return from Morocco after winning a record tenth WAFCON title in 2025.
In addition to the financial rewards and housing allocation, the President also conferred national honours on members of the victorious squad.
Although the cash payments were processed after the completion of administrative formalities, the presentation of the housing allocations was delayed for about a year to ensure the players could receive them together while assembled for international duty.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko explained that the seeming delay was deliberate aimed at motivating the players before the start of the 2026 tournament.
According to Dikko “We decided to present the keys while the players were together in Morocco. Their $100,000 has already been paid into their various bank accounts, and we believe this gesture will further boost their morale as they begin the defence of their WAFCON title” .
Regrettably, what was supposed to serve as incentive to the players in their opening game against Malawi failed to inspire them as Nigerians watched in shock as Super Falcons slumped against a less fancie team
The team will next play Nigeria opened Zambia and Egypt in their remaining Group C fixtures and must now turn the heat on their opponents if they intend to win a record extending 11th continental title.
The 2026 WAFCON, is holding in Morocco from July 26 to August 16, and also serves as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The four semi-finalists will qualify automatically for the World Cup, while one additional nation will have an opportunity to qualify through the intercontinental play-offs.
