World Football Governing body, FIFA has launched an official investigation into the match between Ghana and England in the second group game at the ongoing 2026 World Cup.

FIFA admitted that there were several game changing calls that went against Ghana, and would therefore re-examine key decisions during the match.
The global football governing body has therefore apologised to Ghana after officials of the Ghanaian officials complained bitterly over what they termed biased officiating that favoured England.
Two decisions stand out.England goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford rushing out of his box and bringing down a Ghanaian attacker in a clear goal scoring chance, yet escaped what would have been a straight red card .
The referee, Saeed Martinez just called for a foul, no card was issued to Pickford and VAR was not called in for a review.
In another controversial decision, England defender, Ezri Konsa pulled down a Ghana attacker inside the penalty area when he was through on goal and no penalty was given and VAR was also not called to step in.
Ghana officials have accused the referee of consistently favouring England during the match with any physical contact going the way of the Three Lions, but ignored calls by Ghanaian players, when they were fouled.
Martínez made history as the first Honduran referee at a FIFA World Cup.
After serving as an assistant referee in nine matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, Martínez made history as the first Honduran selected as a lead referee at the world’s biggest sporting event.

The native of Tocoa has built an impressive résumé over the course of his refereeing career, taking charge of some of the most important matches in the region and beyond.
His assignments have included the Concacaf Gold Cup Final in 2021 and 2023, the 2023 Concacaf Nations League Final, the 2025 Concacaf Nations League Semifinals, Concacaf Champions Cup matches, and the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019.
