Barcelona Legend, Gaizka Mendieta still has fond memories of Nigerian players like Finidi George, Jay Jay Okocha and Yakubu Aiyegbeni.
Mendieta said he played against some of them in the La Liga and at different levels,including in some friendly matches organised for legends.
The former Spanish international was speaking at the world press conference in Abuja put together by Attom Foundation heralding the Champions Cup match coming up on Saturday, October 25 between Africa’s legends and Barcelona legends.
He described Nigerian players as exceptionally gifted, whose passion for the game, hardwork and professionalism stand them out.
The Bilbao born Spaniard described making his debut in professional football as the key moment for him ‘as it represents all your dreams of making it in football’
He added ‘Then you follow it up with hardwork, discipline and dedication to be able to make it big and fulfil your professional career’.
On the match between Barca legends and Africa’s legends, he said it was going to be fun and he was looking forward to the game.
Mendieta thanked the organisers, Attom Foundation for putting up the match and giving him the opportiunity to visit Nigeria alongside other legends promising that fans would enjoy themselves.
