The National body of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has listed former FCT SWAN Chairman, Victor Iroele, as one of the privileged media professionals be honoured with the Veteran Sports Journalist Award at its 60th Anniversary holding in Abuja on October 31.
The honour comes as part of the association’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration, marking 60 years of contributions to national development through the vehicle of sports journalism.
In a formal letter signed by the SWAN’s Secretary-General, Ikenna Okonkwo, the association said ‘On behalf of the National Executive Committee and members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected for special recognition as part of activities marking the SWAN Diamond Jubilee celebration(SWAN @ 60) scheduled to hold from October 29 to 31, 2025 in Abuja.’
“This honour is in recognition of your outstanding contributions, professionalism, and enduring service to the growth and integrity of sports journalism in Nigeria”
“Over the years ,your commitment, mentorship, and passion for the craft have inspired generations of journalists and enriched the nation’s sporting narrative.”
The letter further said” As a valued pioneer and pillar of our profession, this recognition is a token of appreciation for your sacrifices and legacy in promoting excellence, fairness and credibility in sports reporting.”
The award will be presented during the SWAN @60 Award and Appeal Fund Ceremony, slated for October 31, 2025, at the VIP Lounge, Package A, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Iroele, is a thorough breed professional, who has exhibited exemplary ethical behaviour as a journalist, not just a sports journalist, and stands out as SWAN Brand Ambassador .
This unassuming gentleman, with influential and commanding personality has mentored quite a number of younger ones, who are today holding their own at different levels of sports journalism.
He started his journalism career from defunct Outlook Newspapers, Enugu in 1990, and later joined the services of National Ambassador, Umuahia as Lagos Bureau Chief from where he was elected as Assistant Secretary of Lagos SWAN before higher calling saw him move to Abuja as Press Secretary To then Sports Minister, Ishaya Mark Aku.
Iroele, later joined the services of Silverbird Communications, as the pioneer Editor, Sports in Abuja,from where he was elected in 2009 as the FCT SWAN Chairman.
As SWAN celebrates @ 60, Iroele joins millions of well-wishers across the country and beyond in felicitating with SWAN and pray for an eventful and memorable anniversary on October 31.
