Former FCT Sports Writers Association,SWAN Chairman, Victor Iroele was one of the distinguished sports journalists and administrators honoured at the SWAN at 60 Anniversary celebration held in Abuja on October 31 at the MKO Abiola Stadium.
Iroele received the Veteran Sports Journalist Award for his outstanding support to the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN and contributions to sports development in Nigeria.
The award ceremony, which was part of activities marking SWAN at 60 anniversary was well attended by past and present sports administrators,stakeholders and sports journalists.
Among those who attended the event include the chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Director General, Bukola Olopade,former DG of the NSC and now traditional ruler of his people in Plateau State, Mallam Alhassan Yakmut,
Others are Vice President of the Handball Federation of Nigeria Sylvester Ikuejamoye, the President of Nigeria Rugby Federation Dr Ademola Are, the CEO of the second tier league, NNL, Emmanuel Attah, Sola Ogunowo,CEO of the Nationwide League One, and former Psychologist of the Super Eagles, Dr Robinson Okosun among others.
Speaking after the award,Iroele thanked the national body of SWAN for the recognition and felt humbled being chosen from the thousands of past and present sports journalists.
Iroele,who was the pioneer Editor, Sports of Silverbird Communications, Abuja thanked his organisation for the opportunity to serve, while dedicating the award to his family for their understanding in the course of his duties
He noted that ‘the reward for hardwork is more work,’ stressing ‘the award will only spur me to do more, mentor more young people and continue to lead by example.I also pray that God will continue to strengthen me to contribute my quota to sports development in the country’
Iroele started his sports journalism career from Enugu to Abia to Lagos and finally Abuja and has shown uncommon professionalism, commitment, and passion for sports, while mentoring and inspiring generations of journalists across both print and electronic along the way.

In a related development, SWAN on Friday also conferred the Distinguished Governor of the Year Award on the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his remarkable contributions to sports development in Nigeria.
The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Amadin Desmond Enabulele, described the honour as “well deserved,” applauding the recognition as a reflection of the Governor’s commitment and visionary leadership in promoting sports in Edo and across the country.



In a statement issued by his Media Officer, Edoko Wilson Edoko, Enabulele said, “Naming Senator Monday Okpebholo as the Distinguished Governor of the Year is a testament to his unwavering commitment and massive support for sports development in Edo. His leadership has turned the state into a true hub of sporting excellence.”
He thanked the Governor for his sustained investment in sports infrastructure and athlete development, noting that his passion has inspired the Commission’s efforts and helped shape the future of many young athletes.
Enabulele added that the award further cements Edo’s reputation as a leading force in Nigerian sports, with Governor Okpebholo’s policies driving progress through grassroots initiatives, partnerships, and talent development programmes.
The award was formally presented to the Governor on Friday, October 31, 2025, during SWAN’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary celebration in Abuja.
At the same event, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele was also honoured with the SWAN Diamond Jubilee National Award for his exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to sports growth in Nigeria.
The award, instituted to commemorate SWAN’s 60th anniversary, celebrates distinguished Nigerians whose work and leadership have significantly advanced the development of sports nationwide.
