Obi Aguocha: A Stone Once Rejected, Becomes The Cornerstone

The Member representing Ikwuano, Umuahia North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, has once again drawn national attention with a bold statement that a stone once rejected by its builders has become the cornerstone of the house.

The amiable politician sought to represent his people in Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South Federal Constituency at the eve of the 2023 general elections, but was rejected by the then ruling party in Abia State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite the sterling credentials he possesses and the alienable right of the axis he hails from to produce the next legislator to represent the federal constituency as at that time.

The young eagle was shepherded out of the race in a surreptitious show of wizardry, witchcrafty and more wits than politics. The resentment that followed, provoked the God Obi Aguocha serves to the extent that hordes of Angels were detailed to guide and guard him as he journeyed to the Labour Party (LP), then relatively unknown, where he met some soul mates like Governor Alex Chioma Otti, Hon Ginger Onwuasibe et al to form a formidable force that raised LP’s bar from its weakling position to a national Iroko, with an internationally recognized meteor, untainted and nationally accepted celestial of a different space, Mr Peter Obi to fly the flag of the party.

LP, during the polls, had the trademark of Obi 73, Obinwannem 74, LP 75…quickly recognised this shining star and immediately offered him (Obi Aguocha) the ticket when he convincingly won his opponents in a tranquil primary devoid of intrigues and filching. Today, Aguocha has proven that a golden fish cannot be hidden in a dark blue sea. He has proven his traducers wrong and has shown that a man/woman, who was cast out of the house into the evil forest, can return to the same house with bumper harvest.

His illumination in Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South and even beyond is enlivening. Like the Rock of Gibraltar, the Rep is standing still, strong and fighting for his people. He continually condemns what he described as deep-rooted injustice and ethnic bias against Ndigbo.

Obinna, scion of a renowned medical practitioner and politician of the great Nigeria Peoples Party (NPP) renowned in the golden days of Nigerian politics, Dr Aguocha of the blessed memory has been a conspicuous voice for not only the people of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, but Ndigbo and Nigeria in general.

He consistently pointed out the ills in Nigeria’s judicial system, asking some of them in the Bench to live up to expectation. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case has been a typical case of interest as per his stout representation. The Representative of Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South has not hidden or kept back his voice, appearance, resources in this project; a project that is in the heart of Ndigbo.

That this eminent son of Ndigbo, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is still languishing in jail is surprising, vexatious, irritating and insulting to Ndigbo. Aguocha and other well meaning Igbo leaders are asking “what did this young man do? Where is justice in Nigeria? Where is justice in the Nigeria’s judicial system? He speaks truth to power and speaks without fear of contradiction when others in the same National Assembly have taken to their heels whenever the issue of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is mentioned.

While speaking ahead of the “Free Nnamdi Kanu Peaceful Protest” held in Abuja on Monday, October 20, 2025, Hon. Aguocha, who also serves as Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s government negotiator, said on Arise television, “the protest to free him Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a protest for Justice, Fairness and Rule of Law”. According to him, the protest is a Moral Duty and a stand for Truth and Equity. He indeed took part in it.

“Let’s speak the truth without fear,” Aguocha had declared. “I strongly believe that every one of us must raise our voices, even if it means doing so through peaceful protests.”

The lawmaker lamented what he termed a disturbing pattern of selective justice in Nigeria, where certain groups are treated unfairly while others benefit from leniency. He accused the federal government of maintaining “two separate laws,” one for the Igbo people and another for non-Igbos.

Aguocha, who has consistently advocated for dialogue and reconciliation in addressing the issues surrounding the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its detained leader, insisted that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention contradicts the principles of fairness, equality, and rule of law that Nigeria claims to uphold.

He called on President Bola Tinubu and the federal authorities to demonstrate genuine commitment to national unity by ensuring that justice is served without ethnic bias. According to him, the prolonged detention of Kanu has only deepened mistrust between the government and the people of the South East.

“Enough is enough,” Aguocha stated emphatically. “Justice must not wear a tribal face. If Nigeria must move forward as one united country, then the same standard of justice must apply to all citizens, irrespective of tribe or political leaning. He emphasized that silence in the face of oppression only emboldens injustice and undermines democracy. When we raise our voices in truth and peace, we strengthen our democracy,” he had asserted.

The Representative at home, works and encourages the governor. That Umuahia, Abia State capital and one of the areas he represents has been elevated from a glorified village status to a ‘nouveau arrive’ kind of a city is due to the cooperation, wise counsel and support of Rep Obinna Aguocha to Governor Alex Otti. The dove in him tells him to stoop to conquer. Others in his mode would have taken on Dr Alex Otti on an unnecessary war-craft, siege-craft; saturating the airspace with needless blitzkriegs that would produce nothing to the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia but idiocy.

At the end, he would, tail in the legs, run to Abuja to shamelessly inform his fans of how bold he was at home. Aguocha is not fashioned in that mode; he is at home with the home front. He visits the people at their Ekpe Days and other festivities, and had some drumsticks or pallets to beat the drums with them. He dashes money; he gives his time and provides advice whenever they are needed. He does not fly in and fly out, and cannot be classified as a helicopter politician.

He has not only represented the people well, but has taken it as a personal fight to give the people of Ikwuno, one of the LGAs in the federal constituency a new LGA. Hon Obi Aguocha has pursued this assignment with some unyielding vigour. Doting the ‘i’s and crossing the ‘t’s to make it to come to pass.

That does not mean that his actions and performance in other LGAs in his constituency have suffered any dwarf-like recession or decline or left in the dark. However, space cannot allow for more elaborate exposé. Next edition will expose more of his excellent performance in the Green Chambers.

This is the man: Obi Aguocha of the Labour Party. He says he wants to go back to the House Representatives to complete his good works and his numerous fans say he deserves it…and who in Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South would say no?

The immediate past Rep Sam Onuigbo broke the virginity of two tenures for Ikwuano, Umuahia North, Umuahia South Federal Constituency, then, would it stop at the Market Stall of Rep Obi Aguocha or the Bus Stop of Ohuhu axis of Umuahia North?

Would the marketers of Otu Onu for Obi Aguocha or Ohuhu succeed? Nde Ikwuano/Umuahia, unu para tuleee ooo…

Hon Uche Nwosu
