NYG: Lagos Athletes Smile To Bank,As Gold Medalists Receive N.5m

Lagos State athletes to the last National Youth Games are smiling to the banks as the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu gifted them cash rewards for an excellent performance at the Games.

Gold medalists received N500,000, silver medalists N300,000 while bronze medalists pocketed N250,000 for their efforts.

Team Lagos emerged winners of the 9th edition of the National Youth Games held in Asaba, last month, dethroning host, Delta State by winning 110 medals, comprising 52 gold, 32 silver and 26 bronze medals.

Sanwo-Olu, who honoured the athletes and officials at a reception organised for them praised the team for their exceptional performance, which saw Lagos halt the domination of Delta at the Games.

The Governor rewarded each of the 41 gold medallists from the games with N500,000; and those who won gold in a team of two also getting N500,000, while gold medallists in other team sports will get N1m.

The 22 individual Silver medallists pocketed N300,000 each, winners in a team of two got N300,000, while silver medallists in team events got N700,000.

The 19 individual bronze medallists got N250,000 each.

Winners in doubles will receive N250,000 as a team, while those who won bronze in team events will smile N500,000.

Other athletes who didn’t win medals got N100,000 each, 61 coaches got a pat on the back with N300,000 each, while the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission was encouraged with N25m.

Governor Sanwo-Olu promised that the state will continue to provide adequate facilities and enhance opportunities for youth to thrive in sports.

He expressed optimism that the young boys and girls will compete at the top level at both national and international competitions in the future,
