NUJ FCT Council Pioneers Free Eye Surgery for Former Chairman

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, led by Comrade Grace Ike, has taken a landmark step in prioritizing the welfare of its members by facilitating free eye surgery for former Council Chairman, Comrade Ndamadu Sule.

Two other journalists, Nicholas Ngozichukwu of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Kamoru Odunlami of ITV, are also scheduled for similar procedures.

The NUJ-FCT Council, in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, successfully provided free eye surgery for Sule on August 28, 2025, ending years of visual impairment and significantly improving his quality of life.

This initiative, a first in recent years, extends to other journalists, with medical assessments, medications, and follow-up care provided for those not yet eligible for surgery.

The landmark surgery for Sule took place on August 28, 2025, with ongoing health interventions continuing for other beneficiaries. Sule noted that his visual struggles began nearly seven years ago, highlighting the timeliness of this intervention.

The procedures are being conducted at the renowned Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, a key partner in the NUJ-FCT Council’s health-focused agenda.

Under Comrade Grace Ike’s leadership, the NUJ-FCT Council is fulfilling its campaign promise to prioritize the health and welfare of its members.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering a healthier, more humane media environment in Nigeria’s capital, addressing the critical needs of journalists through compassionate and proactive leadership.

The Council’s partnership with Nizamiye Hospital has enabled free medical interventions, including surgeries, screenings, medications, and follow-up care. Beneficiaries, including Sule, have praised Ike’s executive for their compassion and resourcefulness.

Sule, overwhelmed with gratitude, lauded Ike’s leadership, stating, “She called me before the elections. I didn’t know her, but I prayed for her as a female leader. God answered those prayers. Her work in healthcare speaks for itself.”

He urged journalists to support Ike’s vision, which has set a new standard for journalist welfare in the FCT.
