Nigerians Express Frustration,As FG Again Increases Price of Passport By 100%

Nigerians have expressed outrage and disgust with the latest increase in the price of Nigerian passport following the last increase barely a year ago.

The Federal Governemnt had September 1, 2024 increased the price of passport and exactly a year later another increase is coming effective from September 1.

They wondered how a responsible government can give only 24 hour notice to effect a price increase of 100 percent in this austere time, occasioned by government’s policies.

This frustration followed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announcement of a new structure for standard passport application fees, with the changes set to take effect from September 1, 2025.

Under the revised rates, a 32-page passport with five years validity will now cost N100,000, while a 64-page passport with 10 years validity will go for N200,000.

The 64 pages booklet with 10 years validity was N100, 000 while that of 32 pages booklet with 5 years validity was N50, 000.

The Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, however, confirmed in a statement Thursday in Abuja, that the adjustment applies strictly to applications made within Nigeria.

He pointed out “However, Nigerians in the Diaspora will not be affected by the review. Their current fees remain unchanged at $150 for a 32-page passport with five years validity and $230 for a 64-page passport with 10 years validity.

The statement said “The review was aimed at sustaining the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring that service delivery remains efficient and accessible to citizens,” .
