Nigeria Targets World Championships Relay Slots At CAA Region ll Championships in Ghana

The University of Ghana sports Stadium will come alive from August 18-19 as the CAA Ghana Region ll Senior Athletics Championships kicks off. 

The Championships beyond serving as at platform for individual and national pride for winners will also serve a veritable avenue for athletes seeking qualification for the World Athletics Championships holding in Tokyo, Japan.

The senior championship is coming almost a month after the junior version was held in Abeokuta with Nigeria doing well in more the female events than the men, even at that the country could not dominate the championship. 

This Region ll holds so much hope for some Nigerian athletes especially the relay teams that must nick it now or forget fly the colour’s of Nigeria at the Tokyo Worlds. 

Team Nigeria athletes aiming to participate at the CAA Ghana Region II Senior Athletics Championships have intensified their training in a bid to secure relay slots for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Under the guadiance of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s (AFN) technical team, led by head coach DSP Solomon Aliyu (rtd), the athletes are engaging in daily training sessions at the Yaba College of Technology Sports ground.

The athletes know the importance of this championships for their careers and the country and therefore must up their game to realise their dreams and the efforts made to prepare them.

President and board of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Tonobok Okowa said the Federation have provided welfare for athletes and the technical crew, thereby enabling them to perform optimally.

Okowa has therefore charged the athletes to maximize their efforts in securing the remaining qualification slots, promising that the Federation will provide comprehensive support for them to achieve qualification. 

He added “We hope that our sponsors will continue to support athletes participating in the Ghana and Tokyo championships, thereby enabling the Federation to cater to their needs adequately.””

Coach Aliyu, who is also a board member of the Federation, said there are no injury concerns presently in the team, while the athletes are satisfied and have vowed to deliver outstanding performances in both Ghana and Tokyo Championships.
