History has been made at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) with the appointment of a first female Vice Chancellor.
The Governing Council has announced the appointment of Prof. Ursula Ngozi Akanwa as the 7th Vice-Chancellor,and she becomes the first female VC of the institution.
Pastor Jerry Eze of Streams of Joy International and Convener of NSPPD has taken to his Facebook page to congratulate the emergence of Prof. Ursula Akanwa as the first female Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, MOUAU .
Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has also congratulated the first female VC of the institution,describing it as a well deserved recognition.
Otti further said “This is more than an appointment.”
It is a milestone.
It is progress.
It is history in motion.

The Governing Council of MOUAU on Friday announced Professor Ursula Ngozi Akanwa as the institution’s 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor making her the first female to emerge the university’s Vice Chancellor since its establishment on Nov. 13, 1992
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Comrade Fidelis Edeh made the announcement after the Council’s 95th meeting where the report submitted by the Selection Panel tasked with overseeing the appointment process was reviewed and approved.
Prof Akanwa currently serves as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Research and Development)at the university. She would assume office on March 1, 2026, in succession to the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe.
Akanwa, an accomplished academic is an expert in Educational Measurement and Evaluation. She joined MOUAU in 2010 as an Associate Professor from Abia State University, Uturu. She rose to the rank of full Professor in 2014. She will officially assume office on March 1, 2026, succeeding the 6th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe.
Her appointment is generating widespread applause as stakeholders believe her experience in research administration and academic planning positions her to further strengthen MOUAU’s mandate in agricultural innovation, research excellence, and community development.
