Iran’s government says it will decide on the national team’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup only after receiving feedback from FIFA regarding a proposed change of match venues.
The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) has formally requested that the team’s group-stage matches be moved from the United States to Mexico, citing security concerns linked to U.S. military involvement alongside Israel in ongoing regional conflict.
The federation confirmed last month that talks had been opened with FIFA over the possible relocation.
Meanwhile, Iran’s sports ministry has placed restrictions on both national and club teams, barring travel to countries it considers hostile until further notice.
Despite these concerns, FIFA president Gianni Infantino recently indicated that Iran’s fixtures would proceed as originally planned.
However, Iran’s Minister of Sport, Ahmad Donyamali, insists discussions are still ongoing.
Donyamali said in an interview with Anadolu Agency “Our request to FIFA to relocate Iran’s games from the U.S. to Mexico is still valid, but we have not yet received a response,” adding “If accepted, Iran’s participation in the World Cup will be certain.
“However, FIFA has not yet responded.
“As the Minister of Sports, together with the Iranian football federation, we will keep the football team ready for the World Cup.
However, the final decision will be made by our government.”
Iran are currently scheduled to play all their Group G matches in the United States, facing New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, before concluding their group campaign against Egypt in Seattle.
U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated that Iran’s team would be allowed to compete in the country, though he raised concerns about whether it would be appropriate for their “life and safety.”
He later clarified that any potential risks would not originate from the United States.
Donyamali also highlighted the importance of security assurances from host nations.
He said “According to FIFA’s relevant regulations, security must be provided in the country concerned,”.
“However, the World Cup is taking place soon, and providing guarantees during this period is questionable.
“Under these circumstances, the possibility of Iran participating in the World Cup matches in the U.S. is very low.
“But, if the relevant security guarantees are provided, our government will make the decision on Iran’s participation in the World Cup.”
FIFA has yet to issue an official response to the request.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, running from June 11 to July 19.
