“Former First Lady Mrs. Aisha Buhari has passionately pleaded with Nigerians to forgive her late husband, former President Muhammadu Buhari, for whatever mistakes he made while he presided over the affairs of Nigeria.
She said her husband left behind an important message for Nigerians bordering on forgiveness, stressing that the late former president specifically asked for forgiveness for any wrongs committed during his time in office.
Aisha, who reportedly spoke in an emotional tribute and took the opportunity to deliver her husband’s message to beg Nigerians to, please, forgive him, stressed that former President Buhari had, on multiple occasions after leaving office, expressed a deep desire to seek the forgiveness of the Nigerian people.
According to Aisha, “Ever since he left office, he often told me that if he passed away before me, I should kindly ask Nigerians to forgive him for any wrongs he might have committed during his time in power.
“He always reminded me that he was only human, capable of both good and mistakes. That is why I’m here today, begging all Nigerians to please forgive him before he is finally laid to rest.”
However, top Buhari officials cast doubt on viral message attributed to Aisha Buhari
In a swift riposte, two senior officials who served under the former president cast doubt on a widely circulated report claiming that Aisha Buhari, the wife of the late president, relayed a posthumous message asking Nigerians to forgive her husband.
The two former senior officials in the Buhari administration, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Keeping Them Honest Daily that they were unaware of any such message and noted that Mrs. Buhari had not issued any formal statement regarding her husband’s death.
“There has been no official word from Her Excellency; in fact, she is right now so broken and in tears and, to the best of my knowledge, not in a position to make any such remarks, publicly or privately,” one of the officials said.
Another of the high-ranking aides described the viral message as “likely fabricated,” emphasizing that in moments of national mourning, “unconfirmed emotional claims tend to spread quickly, often without basis.”
The alleged statement, which went viral on social media and some blogs, quoted Mrs. Buhari as having said that the former president repeatedly asked her to beg Nigerians for forgiveness in the event of his death.
But a review of public records supports the position of the two top aides, as no major news outlet has published a verified statement from Aisha Buhari since the former president’s passing.
What is publicly documented is that in late 2022, while her husband was still serving as president, Mrs. Buhari appealed to Nigerians to forgive the administration for any shortcomings.
During a public prayer session in Abuja, Mrs Aisha Buhari said, “We must apologise to Nigerians and seek forgiveness… We have made our contributions, and God will forgive us.”
But the comment was not framed or perceived as a personal message from President Buhari, who led Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 and died in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, from yet-to-be-disclosed causes
