Two communities in Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, Leleyi Gwari and Leleyi Bassa have commended Care Foundation Initiative For Women, a non governmental organisation, for championing the cause of the girl child.
The communities have also appealed to the Kwali Area Council to support the NGO’s efforts to provide their women with access to primary healthcare facilities.
The head of the community Muhammed Garba decried the rising rate of maternal mortality and the challenges women face in accessing basic health care services.
Care Foundation initiative for women and girls visited the communities to educate them on menstrual health and hygiene, on October 11, the International Day of the Girl Child.
The facilitator, Funmi Olorunmola, used both words and demonstration to discuss menstruation hygiene, with some of the girls confessing that they use rags during their monthly cycle as many of them cannot afford normal pads.
.
After the interactions with the women and girls, the NGO distributed instructional reusable pads to 100 of the girls from both communities.
Some of the beneficiaries lauded Care Foundation for the visit and support and prayed to God to continue to protect and provide for Care Foundation, while looking forward to a better life .
Leaders of these communities used the occasion of the visit to draw attention to lack of basic amenities in their areas,no light, no portable drinking water, no medical facilities and called for government’s visible presence and support.
The founder of the Foundation, Punarimam Benjamin is concerned about the plight of certain abandoned Nigerian girls, however, the International Day of Girl Child presented hope for the women and girls in these communities, especially as it pertains to their health.
Benjamin said the little support was the Care Foundation’s modest effort at assisting the girl child in the area of health hygiene, pointing out that as little as it seems, most of the girls face a lot of challenges during their monthly cycle.
She pledged to continue to lead the Foundation in championing the cause of the girl child, especially in supporting them from time to time with pads for their menstrual cycle.
