The African Union Sports Council Region 2, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission, has convened a Workshop on the Popularization of African Union Policy For Sustainable Development of Sports in Africa.
The workshop, which held in Abuja, had in attendance Sports Directors from West Africa to discuss strategies for implementing the AU’s sports policy framework.
Speaking at the Workshop. Dr. Angel Martins, A.G. Director Social Development, Culture and Sports, African Union, emphasized the importance of member states’ contributions to the Union’s budget, ensuring they’re in good standing and avoiding sanctions.
She said “Our financial Secretary is always in engagement with all the member states to ensure that they are in good standing with the Union,” .
Martins stated that the African Union is committed to nurturing talents and promoting African Games, preparing athletes for international competitions.
She added “The African Union really ensures that member states participate in the African Games so that talents is nurtured and athletes are prepared for those competitions,” .
Martins pointed out “Traditional games are a vital part of Africa’s heritage, and the AU aims to incorporate them into school systems. “Through this workshop and by popularizing the policy, we are hoping that member states will assist us in finding a way of getting this traditional games incorporated in the school system and also sell them to other continents,” .
The workshop is part of the AU’s efforts to drive sustainable sports development in Africa, promoting unity and cooperation among member states. The AU’s vision for African sports is clear: promote sustainable development, nurture talents, and showcase traditional games globally.
The workshop is being held under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman, National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, D.G, National Sports Commission, and Dr. Shamshu Mustapha, Secretary General, African Union Sports Council Region 2.
