AFN Board Member, Okorie Promises Athletes Enviable 2026 Track Year

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) board member and performance director Victor Okorie has encouraged athletes to expect a brighter season full of athletics activities.

In an exclusive interview, a member of the Organizing Committee for the 2026 Enugu State Sports Festival stated that the Federation have almost concluded plans for next season, aiming to provide athletes with all necessary support to improve their performance.

“AFN board members are working tirelessly to accelerate preparations and release the next season’s calendar in good time.
With next year being the Sports Festival and Commonwealth Games year, which also includes the AFN programme, National Trials, and other events, it is expected to be an exceptionally busy year.


Okorie assured that the athletes are encouraged to prepare for an eventful year.


Interestingly, the AFN will consider collaborating with a reputable and reward-oriented kits company that is willing to engage in viable negotiations.


“Numerous knitting firms are being sought after, and the most highly recommended ones will secure the deal.


He commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its efforts in providing funding to the federation, urging private and public businesses to assist in developing (athletics) sports sector to rival those in other countries.


Regarding the Enugu 2026 National Sports Festival, the US-based ex-athlete and hurdler assured that hosting the festival will yield business growth and enhanced personal, group, and interstate connections, describing it as a win-win situation for Enugu State.

The MoC member assured that the host state will strive to rank among the top three on the medals chart, if not win the festival.

He noted that Enugu State athletes will vie for medals in all 36 events, stressing that Enugu State’s triumph will depend on an unwavering commitment to capturing all medals.

Okorie pointed out that Enugu State has all the vital ingredients to finish first, including accomplished athletes, increased allowances, morale-boosting kits, and world-class sports facilities.


When questioned about the potential threat posed by previous winners like Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Edo, and Bayelsa States, he confidently stated that Enugu State is preparing comprehensively and will not falter when the time arrives
