Re: Abduction — No Student of Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, Abducted

The attention of the Sokoto State Government has been drawn to a false report published by Sahara Reporters alleging that 18 students of Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, a private health institution, were abducted by suspected terrorists while travelling to Oyo State.

According to the report, the students were said to have been travelling in a chartered bus from Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, to Oyo State when the alleged incident occurred.

The Sokoto State Government wishes to categorically state that no student of Gamji College of Health Technology, Sokoto, was abducted by suspected terrorists. The public is therefore urged to disregard the report, as it is false and has no basis in fact.

For the avoidance of doubt and to set the record straight, the person reported to have been abducted is Halima Sokeni, a former student of Gamji College of Nursing Sciences, More Area, Sokoto State. She graduated from the institution as a midwife in September this year.

Halima Sokeni was reportedly travelling back home on Thursday, October 1, when she, alongside other passengers, was abducted in Niger State.

The Sokoto State Government therefore appeals to journalists and media organisations to always adhere to the ethics and professional standards of journalism by verifying information before publication, in order to avoid spreading false, misleading and potentially alarming reports.
