MFM Women Basketball Club reclaimed the NBBF/Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League title after edging First Bank 66-64 in a thrilling overtime final at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, on Saturday..
The victory saw MFM secure their third league title in four years after a dramatic contest against the experienced First Bank, who were chasing a record-extending 10th championship.
MFM appeared to be in control for much of regulation time, winning the opening three quarters 11-6, 13-12 and 19-17 to establish a 43-35 advantage heading into the final quarter.
However, First Bank, popularly known as the Elephant Girls, mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring MFM 21-13 to level the scores at 56-56 and force the championship decider into overtime.
With the title hanging in the balance, MFM held their nerve in the extra period, outscoring First Bank 10-8 to seal a 66-64 victory and reclaim the crown.
The triumph also capped an impressive unbeaten campaign for MFM, who won all their matches during the 2026 league season, including three victories over First Bank.
MFM had missed out on a third consecutive title last year after suffering a semi-final defeat to First Bank, but returned stronger this season to regain their place at the summit of Nigerian women’s basketball.
BSNSports reports that in the third-place playoff, Nigeria Customs secured the bronze medal after defeating ASO SKY Queens 51-38.
The result completed a memorable campaign for MFM, who once again established themselves as the dominant force in the NBBF/Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball League.
