Morocco, Egypt, Cabo Verde Among Africa’s Best At 2026 World Cup

The 2026 World Cup may have been over for all ten African representatives but the echoes will continue to resonate weeks and months, even after the conclusion of hostilities across the three joint countries of Canada, Mexico and the United States.

Though Africa made it to the semi final in Qatar 2022 through Morocco but fell short of reaching that height in 2026.The continent however reached the quarter final through Morocco again and had some heartwarming performances from its flagbearers.

Beyond Morocco, Egypt, Cabo Verde, who were making their debut at the mundial and DR Congo, who were returning to world cup after 52 years and Ivory Coast who had never made it out of the group stage before had appreciable results.

Morocco, though did not make it to the semi final, became the first African team to reach back-to-back quarter final at the world cup.Egypt recorded their first win at the world cup first time since they made their debut in 1934, while Cabo Verde in their debut did not lose over 90 minutes to any of the three former champions, Spain, Uruguay and Argentina.

An analysis of Africa’s performances at the mundial by football statistics platform, FotMob shows that Morocco ranked as Africa’s highest-performing team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after recording the continent’s best average player rating in figures released.

The Atlas Lions finished with an average team rating of 7.02, reflecting another impressive campaign on the global stage. The quarter-finalists once again underlined their status as one of world football’s emerging powers following their historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Egypt ranked second among the continent’s representatives with an average rating of 6.92 after an impressive campaign that saw the Pharaohs reach the Round of 16. Ivory Coast finished a close third on 6.91, having produced a series of competitive performances during the tournament.

Senegal placed fourth with a rating of 6.78, while Cape Verde and the Democratic Republic of Congo shared fifth place with identical ratings of 6.76 after both nations exceeded expectations. South Africa followed closely with a rating of 6.73 after an encouraging showing at the tournament.

Algeria finished eighth with an average rating of 6.66, while Ghana placed ninth on 6.62 following a campaign that combined promising performances with disappointing results. Tunisia completed the rankings with a rating of 5.94 after struggling to make a significant impact.

The expectation now is that Africa will continue to build on this performances and showcase the growing competitiveness of the game in the continent
