Police Dismiss Alleged Torture Of Omoyele Sowore

The Force Headquarters has dismissed alleged torture during arrest and detention of human rights activist and a Presidential candidate of African Action Congress, AAC, in the 2023 Presidential election Mr. Omoyele Sowore.

In a statement issued at the weekend, the force high command said Mr. Sowore was released on bail within the 48-hour window, in accordance with the provisions of Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution

A statement signed by the Force Public Relations Office, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said contrary to the falsehoods being circulated in some section of the media, Mr. Sowore was arrested based on credible, corroborated allegations involving criminal offences such as forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions currently under active investigation. 

The statement hinted that, the arrest was effected in full compliance with extant legal provisions, and with strict adherence to constitutional safeguards, due process, and the rights of the suspect.

The Force PRO said Mr Sowore is fully aware of the nature of the allegations against him and has been duly informed of the charges, adding that the right activist is expected to appear before a court of competent jurisdiction in the coming days for prosecution
