AFN National Trials For Commonwealth Games To Hold June 20 In Lagos



The Athletics Federation of Nigeria [AFN] has scheduled its national trials for 20th June to Monday, 22nd June, 2026 at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Yaba, Lagos State.

VDCInsights reports that the trials is to select track and field athletes to represent the country at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

The arrival date for the trials which will feature 32 events for men and women is Friday, 19th June, while departure is Tuesday, 23rd June, 2026.

A statement by AFN’s Media Co-ordinator, Dr. Kola Oredipe, says the Technical Committee led by Gabriel Okon, has released qualifying standards for both home and foreign-based athletes.

The statement stated that while athletes for 100m, 200m and 400m men and women would be eligible to participate based on the set standards, other track and field events will remain open for participation.

It further emphasized that the Federation will provide accommodation for athletes who made the standard within the year under review, with names of qualified athletes expected to be published soon.

The statement also stated that Secretary-General of the AFN, Israel Inwang, has issued letters of invitation to State Directors of Sports, Chairmen of State Athletics Associations, Coaches, Managers, Military, Para-military athletics bodies and athletics clubs for participation.
