For the first time in global athletics history, medals at the Gaborone 2026 World Athletics Relays will feature natural, organic diamonds sourced from Botswana.
This landmark innovation was unveiled by Botswana’s President, Duma Boko.
Valued at P10 million, the diamond-studded medals, introduced by the Okavango Diamond Company (ODC), mark a unique celebration of the host nation’s rich natural resources.
In the meantime, Team Nigeria will be part of the countries seeking a share of this natural diamond sourced from Botswana.
Team Nigeria’s squad are currently at their Lagos camp preparing for this relay brimming with optimism of making podium finish. Nigeria will be competing in 4x100m men and women, 4×100 mixed relay, and 4x400m men and women.
The World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026 is scheduled to take place from May 2nd to 3rd.
