Nigeria Worse Than 33 African Countries In Corruption Index, Ranked 142 Globally

Nigeria is worse than 33 other African countries when it comes to corruption with the likes of Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya, and Botswana ahead of Africa’s most populated country.

Transparency International has ranked Nigeria 142nd out of 182 countries in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index, CPI.

The CPI, which measures perceived public sector corruption on a scale from 0 (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean), gave Nigeria a score of 26—unchanged from 2024.

The result released on Tuesday, however, showed the country dropped two places from its previous 140th position, highlighting deepening corruption and  stagnation in the war against corruption.

Nigeria’s score remains well below the global average of 43, while the global average dropped slightly to 42, with more than two-thirds of countries scoring below 50.

The ranking also places Nigeria behind 33 other African nations.

In Africa, Seychelles led the ranking with 68 points, followed by Cabo Verde (62), Botswana (58), and Rwanda (58).

Other countries ahead of Nigeria include Mauritius, Namibia, Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Tanzania, Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, and Egypt.

Nigeria has consistently maintained an unenviable ranking in the yearly Transparency International’s CPI,despite claims of successive governments of fighting corruption.

The report has not been encouraging since this administration came on board in 2023 with assurances to fight corruption to a standstill like the administration before it.

Nigerians perceive corruption in the public sector from the executive, through the legislature, the judiciary and even civil servants as pervasive.
